We all need to work to encourage diversity
Letter to the editor
Re: Stand up against racial attacks, editorial, Jan. 5.
This was a good editorial to address racial issues in York Region.
While good effort to address racism is made by police and municipalities and so on, it’s not enough.
York Region is one of the key centres of Canadian multiculturalism and ethnic diversity, yet the workforce of the three levels of government isn’t appropriate representative of the demographics.
For instance, the municipal administrations of Richmond Hill, Vaughan and York Region feature few ethnic workers.
I have not seen one in the crews of public works in Richmond Hill, even those who cut the grass, to be an ethnic Canadian, although the taxpayers of the town includes residents of all ethnicities. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I talked to Kathleen Wynne, formerly minister of Education, about the importance of having teachers and counsellors of ethnic background in York Region as an essential step in helping children more quickly integrate. To my knowledge, this has not happened yet.
Elimination of racism needs the collaboration of each of us, as individuls, as well as all of us working together, hand in hand, to keep York Region one of the best places in Canada to live and raise our families.
